A break from fairing

November 17, 2011

Tom has finished the chain way hatch and has now joined me in preparing the forward end of the boat for undercoating with Penguard Highbuild. It is tedious and challenging work in temperatures above 35°C (95°F), with humidity over 80%, every day. So after spending a half day sanding, we treated ourselves to an easy, fun task this evening.

Hi Tom/Judy. Is that a carbon mast? If so 2 questions, where did you get them and do you think they would be strong enough to mount a wind gen on or a 2kw raydome? I want one in each hull for this reason and think I should bury them into the hulls some and want about 3m protruding so need about 4.5 meters long. Would these be suitable do you think? Cheers In advance. Paul

      Paul,

They are fibreglass tubes (34.92mm x 48.3mm x 3m, Stock Code AT850) from Exel Composites, Brisbane branch, ph: 07 3274 1099). We will be placing all sorts of paraphernalia on the top of ours, including a wind generator. They protrude approximately 1100mm above the rooftop. You may need thicker walled tubes for a 3m protrusion, but the guys at Exel could probably advise you accordingly. With a bi-rig, couldn’t you consider having poles in the forward section of the bridgedeck cabin, thus reducing the amount of protrusion?
