Beetles and Epoxy (Sub Locker Bulkhead)

Yesterday I sanded and prepared, marked the positions, glued the sub locker bulkhead and then cleaned down the surrounds with acetone so I could leave the fillet and tape until this evening.

Late this afternoon I wiped down again, piped and shaped the fillets. The photographer took some pictures of this process and I then wet out four pieces of 750 weft triax and laid them all in place. I placed and smoothed the tapes by hand (with the medium tight fitting gloves on) to allow basic smoothing out with a finger along the fillet.

Whilst placing the forth piece with all to yet be rolled out, a small beetle flew onto the work and proceeded to stomp about on my fresh fillet and crawled under the partly laid tape. After rescuing him, I flicked him away and even with epoxy laden legs he flew around and landed on top of my head. So here is the situation:

  • I have resin coated gloves,
  • A resin coated beetle buzzing and tangling himself up in what little hair I have on top, and
  • Four wet 1.2m tapes with a pot life of 15min left in two hulls 6 metres apart.

Well I put up with the little bugger until I finished the rolling out then removed him before I fitted the peel ply on the spots where I will have to bond the locker floor. I then finished up with a vinegar shampoo.

Sorry no pictures of the beetle and I, just some of the boat building work.
