The first cyclone for our 2007/2008 season was a perfect one – formed quickly, tracked as predicted, intensity (Category 2) as predicted, passed during the low of a neap tide, scary enough to get the adrenalin pumping for about 1 hour but no more. Tom decided not to lower the tarp because of the risk of water damage to the boat if he did. His contingency plan was to slash the ropes at the winch adjacent to the house if things got too hairy. Fortunately, it was the right decision and the tarp remained intact, with only one rope snapping during the height of the cyclone.
We discovered why our 1962-built house is full of pre-cyclone Tracy glass louvres. The hollow of the creek region in which we are situated offers us extremely effective wind protection. Although the rest of Darwin was clocking wind speeds of 50 – 60 knots, our highest gust was only 17.1 knots. I reckon real estate agents should use this as a selling feature in our area!
