Based on the recommendations of fellow Oram boatbuilders, we had tentatively decided to use Jotun Imperite 300 as the external topcoat paint on Binary. To reduce the risk of crew slipping over, we were considering adding International Intergrip to this topcoat before applying to the deck, rooftop, and cockpit floors.
The hatch lids for the front lockers provided a good opportunity to test both these products. After achieving a fair surface with three coats of Jotun Penguard Highbuild (I would do this differently next time – ie. using bog to achieve a fair surface before only two coats of highbuild), I then applied two coats of Imperite, each with Intergrip added. The mixing ratio I used was 1 part Intergrip per 8 parts of mixed Imperite (by volume).
The method of application was a subject of “lively” discussion between us. Tom wanted to spray it on, I felt I could do a satisfactory job rolling it with mohair covers. We settled on rolling for these lids, and to try spraying later on the engine locker lids. As it turns out, Tom is more than happy with the results of rolling, so I hope to do all the “Intergripped” surfaces with mohair rollers, and leave the sides and undersides for spraying.
