Head and Laundry Hatches

With the two foredeck panels complete, I have made the cut-outs for the head and laundry overhead hatches. This post shows the edge reinforcement of these cut-outs for the Maxwell Offshore W41 hatches.

Below – both panels complete, with a start having been made on the port hatches, whilst the starboard underwent curing etc.

First I made a ply template for the Maxwell W41. Using the template as a guide, I routed an edge trench for each of the two hatches. These edge trenches were filled with rolled-up unidirectional, cured, and sanded back level with the top laminate. I then cut out the centre and sanded the balsa away from the edge, forming a cut-out with a reinforced edge.

Below – Photo shows the cut out.

Below – The square uni/epoxy edges in the Maxwell cut out, were then used as a guide to rout trenches abutting the original. This second trench was filled with glue and is wide enough to act as a core replacement for the Maxwell’s mounting screws.
