The front cockpit – port side wall

The new doorway to the front cockpit provided easy access for completing the door, hatches and portlights, as well as doublers, in the front cockpit walls. To allow us to continue working in air-conditioning, Tom sealed the cockpit with a temporary plywood wall.

As a result we have been able to do epoxy work at night (when it is cooler outside) in temperatures ranging from 15°C to 25°C (59°F to 77°F). We are both now firmly convinced that if we had our time over again, we would definitely NOT build in the tropics. It is a completely different experience working at these temperatures, and there is certainly a lot less yelling.

The port side wall was the simplest:

  1. no doubler, just two single trenches routed out for the portlights

  2. filled each trench with two ropes of unidirectional glass and glue

  3. sanded and covered with double bias glass fabric (not required, but Tom’s preference)

  4. and removed Duflex centres using jigsaw
