Securing the support poles to the back beam

The holes in the top of the back beam through which the support poles are to pass were decored and refilled with uni-directional rope.

Once cured they were “re-bored” with the 50mm hole saw.

The entire sections of the poles which will be beneath the back beam top were roughened to provide a better bond.

The bottom edges of the poles were shaped to match the contour of the bridgedeck floor, which is quite uneven due to various overlapping tapes inside the back beam. This and the surface roughening were carried out prior to gluing the entire pole/block/pin assemblies to the roof.

After the poles were securely glued to the roof, fillets were made down each side of the poles inside the back beam.

Then two overlapping layers of 140mm weft triaxial tapes were applied.

And of course, peel-ply on top. Then we were left scratching our heads wondering how we could get the back beam top back on.

Nah, just kidding! The back beam panel top was up above, ready to be lowered into position once this work cured.
